Opening Reception for the Artists

Runs thru March 30, 2008

The Julie Rico Gallery AKA the Red Dot Gallery located at 500 S. Spring Street in Los Angeles 90013 is pleased to present etchings by Rafael BuÒuel and paintings by Peggy Reavey. Both artists exhibit work that shows their deep roots in the world of surrealism. Rafael BuÒuel was born in New York City in 1940, and spent his childhood in New York City, Hollywood, and Mexico City. Rafael has written more than twenty plays, most of which have been staged in New York and Los Angeles. As a visual artist, Rafael has had solo exhibitions in L.A. Santa Monica and Madrid. His work is placed in numerous private collections in California, New York, Mexico, Paris and Madrid. Rafael¼s book of drawings and etchings „Inkings is presented in the gallery. Gary Eisenberg at Eisenberg Press in Los Angeles has printed the etchings. Peggy Reavey exhibits personalized stories with strong statements about the realities of some women¼s lives. This work shows a level of surrealism that shuns cryptic messages in favor of gut level emotionally charged images. Ms. Reavey says about her work, „When I began „Dad: Vosges Mountains: 1944¾ I was interested in exploring the courage, terror, grief, my father experienced during WWII, realizing it was something I would never understand. Since then we¼ve had 9/11 and war. So the small acts of cruelty and the gigantic ones came together in my mind. I believe my father¼s horrible experience in War contributed to what was considered a very acceptable level of brutality in our home. And I recall a New Yorker article, in which a San Diego Professor who had befriended one of the terrorists recalled inquiring about a terrible scar on his art. The young man answered, off-handedly, that his father had tried to kill him.¾ E-mail us for more information: julie@weeneez.com
